Despite being run around to buy a bunch of necessities, the other evening we had a chance to go out into the street and meet some of our neighbors.
A few of them had been eying us as we came and went and finally we had time to just walk out and talk for a bit.
They were helping us with our garbage and we introduced ourselves. It seemed like the longer we stood there the more people came over to meet us and say hello. A guy in his mid-twenties came over from down the street and introduced himself as Hunter. He spoke good English and we talked for a while at a little marble (I think) table with marble stools at the end of the street that the city had built for our neighborhood. I say street but its more like an alley.
One little girl kept on running over and saying “Hi My Ca” because thats as close as she could get to Michael. It was a blast and Hunter helped us learn some more Chinese words.
Most of our neighbors seem to be older. The older man who lives right across the street told us to bring all our recyclables over to him and he would make sure they were taken care of! We were very grateful and later Sandy told us that he will be able to get money for the cardboard and stuff so thats nice for him and great for us!
This morning Sandy took us to get our Alien Resident Certificates (ARC cards). I have to say it wasn’t that fun and reminded me of visits to the Secretary of State back home but I’m glad its done. We have to go and pick them up in a few weeks and basically they will act as our ID here in Taiwan.
There is so much more I could write but hopefully I can get Emily to upload some of the pictures we’ve been taking.
